Keep Pets Safe During July 4th Celebrations!

The days surrounding the July 4th holiday are some of the worst for lost pets. Foothills Animal Rescue reminds pet owners to keep their dogs and cats safe this holiday with a few simple safety tips ….

Bring Pets Inside! The loud sounds of exploding fireworks can be extremely frightening for some pets. Many dogs look for ways to escape the noise by climbing over or digging under backyard fences. These pets end up running the streets and are at risk of being hit by a car or overheating in the Valley’s soaring summer temps. Keep your pets safely indoors during July 4th celebrations.

Create an Indoor Safe Haven. Find a spare bedroom or bathroom where your pet can retreat for the night. Provide a comfortable bed, food/water and some toys to help your four-legged friend feel safe. You can also drown out the sounds of fireworks by turning on a television or radio.

Don’t Take Your Pet to Outdoor Holiday Celebrations. Resist the temptation to take your dog with you to holiday parties – especially those that involve firework displays and large crowds. Even the calmest of dogs can be scared by the loud noises that often accompany these celebrations. These events can be extremely stressful for your pet and it is best to leave them at home.

Make Sure Your Pet has Identification! NOW is the time to check your pet’s identification. Make sure that contact information is updated and correct. It is always a good idea to have your pet microchipped as a secondary form of ID. Remember to update your personal information with the microchip company if you move or any of your contact details change.

Have a Plan in Case Your Pet Gets Lost. Be sure to visit both Maricopa County Animal Care & Control shelter locations in search of your lost pet. Hang flyers in the area where your pet was last seen and post lost pet information on Facebook sites such as Lost Dogs Arizona and Straydar.
